What Are Metal Tiers?
ACA marketplace health insurance plans are organized into four "metal" tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The tiers indicate how you and your plan share costs — not the quality of care you receive. All tiers cover the same essential health benefits.
Bronze Plans
Lowest premiums, highest out-of-pocket costs. Bronze plans cover about 60% of your healthcare costs on average. They're best for healthy individuals who want protection against worst-case scenarios but don't expect to use much healthcare.
Silver Plans
Moderate premiums and moderate costs. Silver plans cover about 70% of costs. They're the most popular tier and the only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions (CSR) if your income qualifies — which can make a Silver plan perform like a Gold or Platinum plan.
Gold Plans
Higher premiums, lower costs when you need care. Gold plans cover about 80% of costs. They're a good choice if you visit the doctor frequently, take regular medications, or have a family with ongoing healthcare needs.
Platinum Plans
Highest premiums, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Platinum plans cover about 90% of costs. They're ideal if you have significant healthcare needs and want the most predictable costs possible. Not all areas offer Platinum plans.
Catastrophic Plans
There's also a fifth option: Catastrophic plans, available to people under 30 or those with a hardship exemption. These have very low premiums and very high deductibles, providing a safety net for emergencies only.
How to Choose the Right Tier
Estimate your expected healthcare usage for the year, then calculate total annual costs (premiums + estimated out-of-pocket) for each tier. Often, a higher-tier plan with higher premiums saves you money overall if you use healthcare regularly.
